ASA is a UV‑resistant, weather‑tough engineering plastic used widely in 3D printing, especially for outdoor parts, automotive components, and anything that needs to survive sun, rain, and heat without degrading. It behaves similarly to ABS but fixes ABS’s biggest weakness: sunlight.

What ASA actually is

ASA stands for Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate, a thermoplastic designed to be:

• UV resistant so it doesn’t yellow or become brittle outdoors

• Weather resistant so it handles rain, heat, cold, and moisture

• Impact resistant so it survives knocks and stress

• Chemically resistant so oils and solvents don’t easily damage it

It was originally created as a UV‑stable alternative to ABS, using acrylate rubber instead of butadiene, which gives it far better outdoor durability.

Why makers and engineers use ASA

• Outdoor enclosures and housings (perfect for your van‑lock prototypes)

• Automotive parts (trim clips, brackets, mounts)

• Functional mechanical components

• Garden tools, signage, fixtures

• Anything exposed to sunlight long‑term

Its combination of UV, heat, and impact resistance makes it one of the most reliable materials for real‑world use.

ASA‑CF is a carbon‑fibre–reinforced version of ASA, designed for parts that need to survive harsh outdoor conditions while also being stiffer, stronger, and more dimensionally stable than standard ASA. It keeps ASA’s UV and weather resistance but adds the mechanical advantages of chopped carbon fibre.

What ASA‑CF is made for

ASA‑CF combines Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate with carbon fibre, giving you:

• Exceptional UV and weather resistance, ideal for long‑term outdoor use

• High stiffness and strength, thanks to the carbon fibre reinforcement

• Improved dimensional stability, reducing warping and shrinkage during printing

• Higher heat resistance, maintaining shape under elevated temperatures

These properties make it one of the most reliable materials for functional, load‑bearing, and outdoor‑exposed components.

Where ASA‑CF excels

Common applications include:

• Automotive and marine parts such as housings, grills, and exterior brackets

• Outdoor enclosures and equipment, including electrical housings and signage

• Industrial jigs and fixtures, where rigidity and dimensional accuracy matter

• Structural components for robotics, RC vehicles, and prototypes

PA12‑CF15 is a nylon (polyamide‑12) reinforced with 15 percent carbon fibre, giving you a material that is extremely strong, stiff, lightweight, and dimensionally stable. It sits in the high‑performance tier of engineering filaments and is widely used for functional prototypes, robotics, automotive parts, and industrial fixtures.

What PA12‑CF15 actually is

PA12 is already one of the most stable nylons, with low moisture absorption and excellent chemical resistance. Adding 15 percent chopped carbon fibre transforms it into a material with:

• Much higher stiffness and rigidity

• Higher tensile strength

• Lower shrinkage and warping

• Better heat resistance

• Lower weight compared to solid nylon

• Improved dimensional accuracy

These characteristics make it ideal for mechanically demanding parts.

Mechanical and thermal performance

Different manufacturers vary slightly, but typical values include:

• Tensile strength: around 50–76 MPa

• Elastic modulus: around 3.6 GPa

• Impact strength: up to 55 kJ/m² (unnotched)

• Heat deflection temperature: 160°C in some formulations

• Glass transition: 50–60°C

This puts PA12‑CF15 well above standard nylon and even above many ASA‑CF blends in stiffness and heat resistance.
